New South Wales Growers
Scotts Tubes Pty Ltd. started as a partnership between our parents, Denis and Denise. The original site back in 1980 was at our Grandfathers property on Old Northern Rd Mid-Dural. Denis was doing his apprenticeship at Swane’s nursery and Denise was working at Norm Loaders orchid farm. They raised the capital to start the nursery by growing strawberries and selling them through an agent at Flemmington Markets. After they had left their jobs and started working in the nursery full time they still had to do garden maintenance and various part time jobs to pay the bills. They started the nursery with $3,000 and with a first year’s grand revenue of $6,000 they got an audit from the tax office because they couldn’t believe anyone could survive on so little income.
In 1982 they purchased their current site at Mangrove Mountain with a minimal deposit and a massive loan. Twelve months later they began building the nursery at Mangrove. A staff member and Denis did the building and irrigation etc. Denise traveled to and from Dural to manage the staff and keep the nursery going. Denise was pregnant with their eldest son Greg at the time. The long hours of travel, deliveries and doing cuttings after the day’s work was grueling. This was probably the most difficult time in all the years of running the nursery. With the long hours, lack of experience and financial strain of the high interest rates through the 1980’s.
The nursery developed as a tube stock grower. Supplying mainly the wholesale growers in the Dural district and some limited interstate business. They specialised in growing difficult to propagate varieties of a high quality and always had more orders on the books than they could fill. These varieties were expensive to produce and margins were tight, but at least they were creating activity even though they weren’t getting rich. The nursery continued to develop with the addition of mechanised potting machinery, plug production, and management consultancy. With a staff of around ten, the next fifteen years disappeared as they gained experience both in business management and in growing plants.
In 1996 Scotts Tubes made a major change in direction with its business by producing tubes for the retail market. The Upstarts brand was developed and trade marked, and they began supplying the major chains with tubes in display packs on self-watering merchandising stands. The idea was a great success and has continued to grow into the garden-centre market. In April of 2003 Scotts Tubes became the NSW grower of Renaissance Herbs and Romantic Cottage plants adding to the concept of selling and promoting branded product.
The above history was written by our parents before they passed away on the 19th November 2003. This is when Greg and Candice took over the running of the business.
Major works at the nursery have included 2 new sheds one for production and the other for dispatching customer orders. The dam has been extended and fully fenced. In 2004 an ozone system was installed to purify the water and stop disease. A 225,000 litre water tank and irrigation shed are also part of this system. In 2004, Scotts Tubes, through years of hard work and great expense, became an accredited nursery.
2007 saw the revamping of cutting houses. New double skinned plastic for insulation and a new propane gas ray pack boiler system were installed. This has halved our growing time. Extraction fans in these houses automatically turn on when the temperature reaches 32 degrees. A fogging system which works on a humidity thermostat is also an important addition.
We are uncertain of what future challenges may arise – be it flood, drought, water restrictions or rabbits! These are but a few bumps along the nurseryman’s road that we will continue to face. We strive to search for the ‘next best thing’ as competition for retail space has never been greater and will no doubt increase as the years pass. We endeavor to rise to these challenges, to be the best that we can be and continue to provide a premium product and premium service.

Queensland Growers
The nursery is located at Wollongbar, in Northern New South Wales. It is ideal situated on the Alstonville Plateau and only an hour south of the Queensland Border. Our nursery was started in 1973 by the renowned plantsman, Ken Dunstan. Ken introduced many new plants for the home gardener such as the beautiful Tibouchinas and the Callistemon Little John to name a few.
The Parker family purchased the business in July 1988 and recently relocated to a new nursery site a few kilometres away. The new facilities gives plenty of room for expansion in the future.
The nursery is a family affair, operated by Ray and Diane Parker and son Damien. Parker’s Place commenced growing Renaissance Herbs in March 1993 ready for the launch at the July 1993 Spring Green Expo, an annual trade only event held by the Queensland Nursery Industry. The release was a great success and Philip Moore soon established other franchises in all States and New Zealand. All growers meet annually in February and July to discuss new plants and ideas for the coming year as well as being there to assist each other during the year.
Our herb production and dispatch is supervised by Kathy Turner. Kathy has a great passion for herbs. Other members of our team all assist Kathy at varying times. It gives them the opportunity to learn about and appreciate herbs, an important part of our nursery operations.
In the last few years we have exhibited at the ABC Garden Show in Brisbane. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet and discuss herbs with so many dedicated gardeners over the three day event.

South Australia Growers
My working life began in a builder’s office with a view to train as a Quantity Surveyor. The indoor life was not for me and I found employment with Lasscocks Nursery and Garden Centre. After a period of time, I found employment with a builder involved in renovation/building work. I was able to learn a lot of skills such as concreting, tiling, stone work, scaffolding and bricklaying. I finally went to work for another builder as a bricklayer and was left alone at the age of 19 to build a 40 square high walled supermarket. Unfortunately, the building industry went into a slump and I decided to bide my time in the family nursery (A.H. & G.M. Briggs – Bedding Plant Specialists). My building itch caused me to build a new toilet block, more poly tunnels and finally an air seeder. During this time, I studied “creative selling and public speaking”.
By now, the short temporary stay at the family nursery had turned into years and I was now addicted to plants. I studied at Urrbrae Agricultural College with a credit in “annuals and perennials”. Over the years, I have trained and been assessed and now hold an Advanced Diploma in Horticulture.
My wife, Denise, attended Brighton High School and studied commercial courses with a view to working in an office. She secured a position with a builder who was involved in tenders and contracts for Government work. She began as a junior learning a 6 line switchboard and typing/reception work. At the age of 19 she was promoted to the Secretary to the Managing Director and was wholly responsible for the correspondence etc. for all the Directors and Quantity Surveyors involved in the firm. She left to have our first child and returned for one year and then became a full time home maker. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and made our children’s clothes. After the third child, she became involved in the nursery business in propogating and office work. Her hobbies are gardening, bird watching and has now identified 52 species in our property, and has been involved for many years in a floral art club and holds a certificate in floristry.
In 1981, my wife and I broke away from the family business and started on our own. We purchased a 4.25 ha vineyard at McLaren Vale which would become our home and new nursery site. Once again, my background was invaluable. Renovating old existing buildings into staff facilities and office, I then built a toilet block and nursery structures and we continued to grow.
The bedding plant industry was declining and so we had to change the product we grew. We employed 15 people. Our customer base included hardware stores, garden centres and a national super market chain. We ran two trucks and used taxi trucks to dispatch our product We had to downsize to just family members.
In 2006, we purchased Renaissance Herbs and Romantic Cottage franchise for which we both have a passion as we discover and learn new herbs, chillies and vegetables and grow our business. We now are a family business and employ casuals on a needs basis.

Victoria Growers
Romantic Nursery was started in December 2006 as the vehicle to purchase the Victorian license for Renaissance Herbs and Romantic Plants. It was started by Clive and Di Larkman who were, and are, the proprietors of Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd. Larkman Nurseries is a successful propagation nursery that produces in excess of 2000 varieties per annum with ability to do many more.
Larkman Nurseries is accredited under the nursery industry national accreditation scheme. It is a member of the state and national industry associations. It is also a long term member of The Australian Lavender Growers Association. Clive is treasurer for the International Plant Propagators Society and has just been elected to board of the Nursery and Garden Industry of Victoria (where he has been given the portfolio of Biosecurity and Research and Development). He also chair of Agribusiness Yarra Valley and the Victorian Agribusiness Council.
Romantic Nursery use the facilities of Larkman Nurseries to propagate the cutting and difficult germinate varieties at the Lilydale site. The seed grown varieties and growing on is all done at the recently constructed Wandin site. All plants are hardened off to the cold in winter and heat in summer so as to ensure the public gets a tough plant best able to respond in their home gardens.
Clive is a keen collector of plants and regularly imports new, old and lost varieties from all over the world. Some of these include industry standards like Lavandula ‘Avonview’, Sisyrinchium ‘Devon Skies’ Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’, Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’, Heuchera ‘Chocolate Ruffles’, Agapanthus ‘Purple Cloud’ and Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’. He has also released many native plants that he has found in his travels around Australia like Correa ‘Annie’s Delight’, Westringia ‘Smokie’ and Correa ‘Win’s Wonder’. These (and other introductions) were sold under the Larkman Plants brand and are now sold under the ‘Garden Vogue’ brand.
Clive has been a regular presenter on the Garden Gurus since Spring 2009. His segments are on using herbs in the home kitchen with a series of clips on herbal teas, salads and hot dishes. He also writes for the trade magazine ‘Hort Journal Australia’, the retail magazines; Garden Gurus and Australian Better Gardens – both of which are given out at nurseries and garden centres around Australia. He is also a regular on Melbourne’s top rating garden show on 3AW. The majority of the above involve herbs and perennials in the home garden. Clive also presents cooking demonstrations in store for several garden centres during the year and at various garden shows.
Within the group Clive has the task of writing, designing and managing the labels. He also regularly uses his network of plant collectors from around Australia and the world to find new and different herbs. In 2010 he introduced Chia, Purple Carrots, Purple Asparagus, Black and White Nasturtiums and several different mints to the Renaissance range. Clive and Di are currently working towards Organic Certification for a limited range of herbs and vegetables.
