Tomato Heirloom Reinstraube

Riesentraube, meaning 'giant bunch of grapes' is a German heirloom
variety. This is an extremely productive plant, bearing astonishingly
long clusters of 20 to 40, 30-35mm red fruit. Flavour is so rich, it
is often used to make tomato wine.

Common name (s):                             Reisentraube Tomato

Description:

A heavily fruiting cherry type tomato with a definite pointed base.  Originating in Europe it was originally used for producing tomato wine.

Flavours/Food Partners:

Cherry tomatoes partner well with Latin herbs like garlic, oregano, marjoram, rosemary and thyme when cooked or when fresh they are enhanced by herbs like parsley, chives and celery leaf.   They are pleasant when eaten whole on their own.

Health/Cooking/Medicinal:

Like all tomatoes, Reisentraube are high in the cancer fighting agent, Lycopene.  This is enhanced by moderate cooking.  Serve whole in salads or lightly fry with fresh purple asparagus, garlic, pesto basil and lemon grass.  Quarter and mix with orange and yellow cherry tomatoes, diced fetta onion and fresh coriander for a colourful salad.  They are high in Vitamins A, B1, B2 and C.

Landscaping/Planting:

Plant in an airy, sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots.  Does not require a stake.

Cultivation/Fertiliser:

Like all tomatoes it must receive deep soaking when almost dry and should not receive overhead watering.  Feed regularly with Seasol and Powerfeed.  A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants.  Harvest when fruit is full color.
