Tomato Heirloom Rouge de Marmande

A French heirloom that has an outstanding flavour with very few seeds. Clusters of deep red, slightly flattened, ribbed fruits that are up to 9 cm across. It will set fruit well in cooler conditions than other varieties. Good disease and pest resistance.

Description:

Large flattened fruit with strong flavour and fruiting early in the season. Good variety for cooler climates.

Flavours/Food Partners:

Fresh tomatoes are enhanced by herbs like parsley, chives and celery leaf. Can also be blended with more dessert type herbs like mint, lemon balm and the fruity sages. Partner with any leafy vegetable like lettuce, spinach, mizuna or beetroot leaves. If cooking mix with shallots, garlic, basil, oregano and chilli.

Health/Cooking/Medicinal:

Like all tomatoes, Rouge de Marmande is high in the cancer fighting agent, Lycopene and Vitamin C. Serve in salads, sandwiches or mixed with a variety of capsicums, cucumbers, olives and fetta for tasty salad. Health benefits can be enhanced by moderate cooking. Rouge de Marmande is good for or using in pasta sauces or stuffing with a mix of mushrooms, herbs, garlic and some parmesan cheese.

Landscaping/Planting:

Plant in an airy, sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots. Requires a 1.4 to 1.8m stake.

Cultivation/Fertiliser:

Like all tomatoes it must receive a deep soaking when almost dry and should not receive overhead watering. Feed regularly with Seasol and Powerfeed. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants. Remove side shoots and develop two or three main leaders. Harvest when fruit is full color.
